Protection Boob-adin

A couple nights ago one of my dual boxed teams, DoubleD, reached level 40. This is an exciting level because for Paladins it means the ability to wear plate armor and for my Priest too as it means Shadowform. I was more excited about the plate armor because it meant Nyquist could tank better and thus increased survivability for the team as a whole.

Once the team dinged 40 I headed over to the Auction House (AH) in search of a full set of plate to replace my existing and aging mail armor. Since the leveling speed in the Recruit-A-Friend program is set to ludicrous, I didn't want to spend a lot of gold on new armor because I knew I'd be replacing them rather quickly.

So I cobbled together a full set of inexpensive but decent plate armor, equipped them, and headed back into the world of Azeroth. Though the set of plate was bargain priced "greens" it was still a very nice boost to Nyquist's armor. So the team spent the next couple of hours questing away in Stranglethorn Vale negotiatiating through hostile lands filled with raptors, and tigers, and trolls, . . . oh my!

The predominant view of WoW is typically from behind your character. Unless you intentionally swing the camera around you rarely see your character face on, except of course while logging in. So when I logged into Nyquist the very next day, I was astounded to see that my little tank, the dwarf male, Protection Paladin had . . . boobs?!?

Protection Boob-adin

Talk about a "WTF" moment followed by hysterical laughter. Apparently, the plate armor chestpiece I had bought the night before, Warbringer's Chestguard of Strength, wasn't so flattering for a male dwarf! I usually don't Ctrl-Left-Click an item to see how it looks on my character, but you had better bet I'll be doing it from now on.

"Hi, Nyquist here, Protection Boob-adin, I'll tank for you, . . . ummm, my face is up here".

iPhone App: Warcraft Characters 2.1

Just a quick note to say that version 2.1 of Warcraft Characters [iTunes link] has just been released on the App Store. You should be able to update as usual either via iTunes or directly on your iPhone or iPod Touch.

"This release added few missing stats (defense & spell hit, apologies to warlocks and tanks), arena team support, and lots of bug fixes."

Ludicrous Leveling Speed

Triple XP
Last night I finally joined the "Recruit-A-Friend" (RAF) program and let me tell you that the speed of leveling is amazing. No, let me rephrase that, . . it's absolutely ludicrous.

Though the triple experience from killing mobs is nice, it's nothing compared to the triple experience from turning in quests. Since running Team DoubleD as a RAF pair, I was amazed that they had leveled from 37 to 39 from just turning in a few quests that I had already completed.

Armory Browser Cease and Desist

Armory Browser logoThere has been an interesting turn of events to the native iPhone and iPod Touch application called Armory Browser [iTunes link]. I reviewed this application just a few days ago and on Friday the new 1.1 update was available on the App Store.

I was about to do a followup review outlining the changes in this update but found out that Blizzard has issued the developer, Kelly Heffner (aka Theoria) of Pwnies, a cease and desist notice. Apparently Blizzard views this as an unauthorized application and that it is potentially causing them "irreparable damage".

Now I'm wondering if the other iPhone application developers have received a similar notice? There are presently four World of Warcraft related native iPhone and iPod touch applications on the App Store, two of them are free (Warcraft Characters [iTunes link] and WarcraftStat [iTunes link]) and the other two are paid (Armory Browser and Warcraft Arena Calculator [iTunes link]) at 99 cents (US) each.

It may be that Blizzard is taking issue to the fact that Armory Browser is a paid application, and that it's using or accessing their freely provided service (the official WoW Armory), but that is purely speculation on my part. If this is the case I wonder if just providing the application for free will stop continued action?

I don't know all the legal issues or circumstances behind this notice, but regardless of the real reason it appears that Armory Browser will no longer be developed and will be pulled from Apple's App Store on Monday, August 25, 2008.

It's really too bad as it seemed the developer was really keen on making a nice application and feature rich application. The new release added improvements including a "Favorites" feature so you didn't have to keep retyping in your character's name, as well as some beautiful artwork commissioned from KiroColor.

The "Find an Upgrade" button still opened up mobile Safari, but I was told by Theoria (via an email) that it was done intentionally for the initial release to avoid any confrontation with Blizzard. Ironic isn't it?

Perhaps this is a warning to all developers to be careful what they are doing with Blizzard's intellectual property. Perhaps it's an indication that Blizzard may be working on their own native iPhone armory browser? Again, just speculation.

I truly hope this turns out differently.

Dual-boxing Re-noobification

Following through on my idea and plan from yesterday, I jumped on to one of my dual boxed teams, Team DoubleD, and just stared in puzzlement.  It's been over a month since I last logged on to this team and I believe I forgot what to do.  Glancing back and forth between the Paladin and the Priest screens, I was a little lost.  I knew the basics of what I should be doing, but I didn't quite remember the specifics of what I had set up in my UIs and what all the buttons in my Action Bars were for?

I continued staring at the two screens trying to decipher what it all meant.  Like hieroglyphics the icons in those Action Bars remained a mystery.  What are these cryptic names like "Pa1", "Pa2", "Pa3"?  What the hell does that macro button "NfH" do exactly?  Why is it when I hit the "1" key nothing happens?  Now why did hitting the "2" key make my character do that?

A sinking feeling came over me and I realized, . . . oh my god, I've been re-noobed!

My dual-boxing skills reduced to confusion, my workflow and routines gone, my macros were useless. I couldn't believe it, I am a noob once more.

The thing with dual- or multiboxing is one of routine and coordination.  Some level of coordination whether it be between you and your hardware or your characters to each other is definitely required, and setting up routines are a big part of that.

I have a very simple start up routine when I log on to any of my teams and it allows me to quickly get ready to adventure and quest. I use to have a routine when I engaged mobs to fight them, and had macros to help with coordinating attacks and the occassional heal or bubble when things got rough. But apparently I had forgotten all that.

Since I've gone through a re-noobification, it's best that I start from scratch and restablish my routines again. Perhaps I'll even get around to writing about my set up and how I'm doing it.

Double XP Now and Later

Now and Later LogoLately I've neglected playing any of my multi-boxed teams. I believe the last time I got on to any of them was when Patch 2.4 was released and I got the level 30 mounts for Team DoubleD. Wow, has it been over a month already?

I haven't given up on those teams, I just got into doing other things. The distraction actually began in mid-July when I checked Team DoubleD into an Inn to get some rest so I could have some rested XP when I resumed. So I hopped back over to my hunter, Ziv, and it was at that time that I started the endeavor for that Frostsaber mount. I also joined a new guild that I enjoy the company of and have been doing instances with them and gearing up the core group.

We've slowed down a bit on the instances and I've been getting anxious to run the teams once again. To get back into it, I'm going to participate in the "Recruit-A-Multiboxer" program but haven't done so yet. It turns out the with the "Recruit-A-Friend" program there is a serendipitous benefit to having Team DD resting in that Inn for so long. So here's my idea and plan.

The idea is to play Team DD and use up their rested (double) XP before changing over to the "Recruit-A-Friend" program. Why would I first use up the double experience gains when I could get triple experience from being in the program immediately? Well, it's to get even more double XP. Confused yet?

Everyone knows that participating in "Recruit-A-Friend" will yield triple experience from killing mobs and quest turn ins. Participating in it also means that any rested XP your characters have already or gains while in the program will not be consumed. So that means the rested XP bonus will be waiting there for when the program finishes (either by hitting 60, or by reaching the 90 day limit).

If the characters are already capped with rested XP (like Team DD should be for being in that Inn for so long), they won't gain any new rested XP. See where I'm getting at? Use the double XP now to get more double XP later. Pretty nice huh? But why should I do that when I should be able to get to 70 within those 90 days right? True, but I also want to use the program bonuses on several teams that I'd like to level all the way to 70, and since the triple XP gains ends when my team gets to level 60, the rested XP is just a nice additional bonus. So basically I'm just leveraging it so I could take maximum advantage of the program.

So that's the idea at least, the plan is to play Team DD for a few more days until my second account is due to have it's subscription renewed. Then I'll be able to "recruit" myself and start reaping the new benefits. So it's double XP now, and double XP later, with a lot of triple XP thrown into the middle.

iPhone App: Warcraft Arena Calculator

Arena Calculator logoIt looks like there is another iPhone and iPod Touch application available on the App Store. This is actually the fourth native iPhone and iPod Touch application available and it's called, Warcraft Arena Calculator [iTunes link], and as you could tell from the title it's basically that, . . . an arena points calculator.

The application is written by Zevo Inc. and costs 99 cents (US). I have to admit that I initially hesitated on hitting the purchase button since it didn't seem like there was anything more than just a simple arena calculator. However, I wanted to see what it's about, and since I've said in my previous post that I like supporting new developers, I went ahead and put down my 99 cents (US). Now that I own it, let's take a look.

Here's their application description:

"ArenaCalc is a Warcraft arena points calculator. Use it determine how many arena points you'll receive for 2v2, 3v3, and 5v5 arena teams. In addition, season 3 and season 4 item costs are included."

The above description is actually exactly what it does, nothing more, nothing less. Enter your Arena Rating and it spits out your predicted arena points you'd get for that week. It has the exact same functionality as the official WoW Armory Arena Calculator. Actually it has less functionality than the official calculator since it doesn't even have the Rating Calculator, or the Time Calculator.

Arena Calculator

There's not much more to say about this really except that it's completely easy to use, has a plain but clean interface, and does exactly what it says it's suppose to do. It does have a beautifully designed icon though. Maybe they'll apply some of that icon design wizardry in their next update?

I hope the developers are actually going to do more with this application. Even though it is a 1.0 release they could have done more. They say that their development team is "full of World of Warcraft PVP players", so I would assume they know what PvP'ers would like to see in an iPhone application. Any big time Arena players out there that care to comment on what else could be done with this application?

I just don't think I'll be using this application very much, it at all. Perhaps if there was more to it then I'd be more excited. For now, I'll await an update.

iPhone App: Armory Browser

Armory BrowserThere's another World of Warcraft related iPhone and iPod Touch application available on the App Store. It's called Armory Browser and as you could probably guess from the name, it's an armory browser.

I know this was released a while ago, but to be honest there are so many new applications being released, that I didn't even see this until today. The application is written by Kelly Heffner and though it's not a free application, it is only 99 cents (US).

I actually did purchase this application. Though there are other free alternatives that offer more, like Warcraft Characters, and the still in development WowiArmory I wrote about earlier, it's still potentially worth the price of admission. My initial impressions are that it's definitely a 1.0 release so it could be improved but the potential for so much more is there.

It's a decent rendition of a character's WoW Armory page. I say that because once you enter in a character name and realm, you are greeted with a layout that is very similar to the official WoW Armory site with some information in the middle and your items along the edge of the screen. Clicking on an item shows you that item on a new screen. It's not quite like the armory page though as the only information about your character's stats are limited to Talent point distribution and your Trade Skills level.

Armory Browser Armory Browser

There's an interesting button on the bottom of an item page, "Find an Upgrade". I was hoping this would bring up a nice list of items, but instead was sent to the actual WoW Armory page for that item. This meant that the program had to close and open up mobile Safari to access the official WoW armory. Very disappointing especially since closing the program meant that I had open the program again and since it didn't save my character's name, I had to type that in again too. This means it will do this every time you want to search for an upgrade for a particular item. This behavior also happens when you click on the Talent button in the middle of the main screen; it will take you to the WoW armory talent tree page.

There's an issue that you can't input character names that have any unicode characters in it, but the developer is already aware of this and it's listed in the FAQ.

The application doesn't appear to cache any information locally and accesses the armory with every query, so you will need to be connected to the internet of course. Performance is fast over WiFi and 3G, but surprisingly also very responsive over the older Edge network. Download speeds and thus responsiveness is naturally linked to the quality of the connection and not the application itself. It proved to be stable while I was using it, but I didn't expect it to be unstable either as it's quite straightforward as to what it's doing.

As I mentioned, it's a 1.0 release that is available on the App Store, but version 1.1 has already been submitted (on August 14, 2008) and is just awaiting Apple's approval. Looking at the preview, it appears that it will be made to look nicer with only a minor change in functionality. There's no mention of any functionality changes to the "Find an Upgrade" or the Talent button, so I assume it will still link directly to the WoW armory. I hope a subsequent version will address that issue as it's somewhat of an annoyance, but at least in 1.1 I shouldn't have to to keep retyping in my character's names.

Personally I think this application has potential but right now has a ways to go if it is to match the features already present in Warcraft Characters. I am encouraged that this application is in active development and look forward to the updates. Others may balk at the idea of paying for this application, but at 99 cents (US) I don't think it's unreasonable. I believe in supporting and encouraging new developers in hopes that they will improve their product and add user requested features. I will look forward see how far my 99 cents (US) will go.

If you are interested in following along with the development of this program, you could check out the application's blog.

iPhone App: Warcraft Characters 2.0

Warcraft Characters 2.0Yesterday, version 2.0 of Warcraft Characters became available on the iTunes App Store.

It's a good thing that I'm watching Rudi's blog and that Apple has implemented an application update notification feature in iTunes and the iPhone, because there are so many new applications being release that's it hard to keep track of things.

It looks like Rudi has been hard at work addressing some issues in the initial release of this application, as well as revamping the UI, and also adding a new set of cool features:

  • "Faster search! No need to enter your realm’s name. Just enter a character name and choose among all realms where the name exists."
  • "Worldwide region support. US, EU, KR, CN, TW."
  • "Items! Triumphantly show off that one piece of gear in which you had to endlessly run with random PUG’s that kept needing on the one item that was only useful for you."
  • "Reputation! Are you exalted with all factions yet?"

He didn't mention it, but he also updated the icon too. So now it's not so plain.

I just did an update, and gave it a quick run through. The initial release was a very responsive program, and this new version is just as responsive. It maintains it's beautiful and intuitive interface so it's easy to navigate and use. The new items features is very impressive indeed. It shows a nice list of your character's items and then when you click on it opens up a new screen showing you the item. I noticed that it didn't list any enchants that were on the items, but perhaps that will be added in a subsequent release?

I did find one little bug in it that caused it to close, but I already reported this to Rudi. It's a repeatable bug that causes the it to close prematurely, but it only happens at very specific time so you may not even have this happen to you. This actually may very well have been fixed already, but the way Apple controls these applications and it's approval process means that there's a delay in the time of submission of a fix to it being released on the App Store.

So if you are using this application on your iPhone or iPod Touch, hop over to the App Store and grab the update it's well worth it. Here's the direct iTunes download link.

Consuming Distilled WotLK Beta News

The Wrath of the Lich King beta has been available by invitation only for short while, but long enough to get some exciting sneak peeks at things to come. The frequency of new things being reported was somewhat overwhelming and to me at least, WotLK beta news overload.

I do like knowing what's coming in the new expansion, but not enough to try to consume every single piece of beta news that comes out. I'm mainly interested in the major changes coming to the game and issues that Blizzard is trying to address. I'm not particularly interested in all the minute details because I know as the game develops, a lot of the things in the early beta may either be changed or removed completely.

So to keep informed without being overloaded I've been taking in some of the news via a few podcasts that I listen to. Podcasts are great because it's a form of news distillation in an easy to consume format, audio. Listen to them at home, office, car, or mobile music device. Not only do I get the key focus points of the news, but also some fun and engaging commentary.

Since podcasts have to be recorded and produced, there is a time delay in the breaking news and what's reported on a particular podcast. But for me that's okay because I'm looking for the distilled news anyway, so a few days to a week delay is fine with me. Naturally there will be an overlap of news, but what makes these podcasts so fun to listen to are the people behind the podcasts and the personality each brings to the news.

Maybe it's just that I like distilled things, but honestly, podcasts are a good way to at least keep informed on the biggest news coming out of the beta. Here are a few that I'm currently listening to (in no particular order):

So if you want to know what's happening with the WotLK beta but don't want to go through all the raw news yourself, try a distilled form and give the above podcasts a listen. You may enjoy it as I do.

--

[Update: October 7, 2008] There's a relatively new podcast (up to five episodes as of last week) out there that I truly enjoy listening to and would like to add it to this list. As a hunter, his site BigRedKitty (aka BRK) has been a great site for all things hunters in WoW. His podcast is no different and he's been hard at work in the WotLK beta providing us with hunter news. So go check it out:
